Hello Students and Families!
My name is Alma Micic and I am the music teacher for grades PreK-8. I have been teaching at OLQM since 2009, so many of you know me already.
It's my pleasure to start this music education blog for all of the music classes at OLQM.
This week we will have exciting events- two Spring shows!
The first one will be featuring all PreK classes on Tuesday, April 4th and the second will feature Kindergarten classes and first grade on April 6th. We hope that the parents can come and join us in our musical celebration of Spring!
So far this school year, PreK and K classes have been focusing on music and movement, coordination and motor skills. They have also been introduced to rhythm variation and percussion instruments such as shakers and tambourines- we use those often in class, and each child get to try them out in various musical settings. PreK-1st grade also learn basics of Solfege or the "sol-fa" system where they relate to melodies through music notes. They learned about orchestra instruments and their sounds, and explored a symphony orchestra through the listening of "Peter and the Wolf" by Prokofiev, a narrated musical folk tale.
Grades 2-4 have been learning the basics of music theory and music history. So far we have explored Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Haydn and Tchaikovsky ( their favorite by far as he is the composer of Nutcracker!). We learned about the lives of these composers and their work through fun narratives and relatable stories of the times in which they lived and composed beautiful music.
Grades 5-8 have been learning basic piano skills and basic vocal technique. They are gifted singers and we have been exploring various styles of music throughout the 20th century- jazz, soul, rhythm and blues, doo-wop era and the contemporary artists of the day. Religious songs are a very important part of our repertoire and we are constantly learning new songs that are adequate to the seasons, although "On Eagle's Wings" remains the students' favorite song. Also included in the curriculum so far we covered basic music theory and note recognition on the piano, as well as music history and instruments of the orchestra.
Please check back in frequently for curriculum updates and events!
