Third grade will continue to learn the basics of the recorder flute, and practice the basic melody of the song “Hot Cross Buns”. The students will get used to reading notes displayed on the board and car leading to the pictures on the flute.
We are in full swing of preparations for our Hispanic heritage presentation that will take place in two weeks. The pre-K classes, as well as classes K through eighth grade have all been practicing very hard.  We will continue to incorporate percussion instruments from various part of the world into our music lessons. We will also explore the basics of piano with the younger grades and discuss the pentatonic scales and their historic use around the world in the upper grades.  Featured composers for this week are Haydn, Mozart, and Liszt.

Week of September 22

Dear OLQM Students and Families,
This week I will introduce the third grade to block flutes/ recorders and each will receive their own recorder with a case and cleaning rod. Please note that these instruments will be kept in the music room and sent home once a week for cleaning. I am excited to show the students a new instrument, and we will also begin to learn basics of sight reading of notes using the smart board.
In upper grades we will continue with new repertoire for block flute, as well as preparations for several upcoming events which will feature choral music- Hispanic Heritage month as well as Feast of St Francis for which we are preparing a beautiful music program.
Younger students will be using percussion instruments this week, participating in rhythm games which are wonderful for further developing fine coordination and detail oriented focus in many fields in other subjects.
Please note that following instructions and being respectful towards peers and teachers is the most important foundation for  marks/grades in my class. You will begin seeing marks/grades that correspond to that standard.
Please review he lesson plan for this upcoming week if you would like to find out the details of our musical endeavors.
